The challenge
Leadership practice varied across the network. Many Centre Directors had been promoted from within and were now leading former peers, without a clear shift in mindset or approach. Turnover was unstable and people issues kept escalating.
The work
A People and Leadership Capability stream for 28 Centre Directors and 4 Area Managers. The focus was the identity shift from team member to leader, backed by practical skill in delegation, performance conversations, safety, trust and succession planning. Each topic was treated as a capability, mindset and knowledge build, not a one-off briefing.
The result
Services embedded consistent leadership and performance practices, reduced turnover variability, and lifted engagement. Regional leaders moved from firefighting to strategic oversight.
